ABLETON MASTERCLASS: Build a Drum Rack for Distribution

To create an installable Ableton Drum Rack, assemble your kit on a MIDI track, add effects, and save it as an .adg file in your User Library with "Collect Files on Export" enabled to ensure samples are included. For distribution, zip the .adg file along with its associated samples folder to create a shareable installer pack.

Steps to Create and Package a Drum Rack

Build the Rack:

  • Drag a blank Drum Rack from the browser (Instruments) to a MIDI track.
  • Drag your samples (kicks, snares, etc.) onto the pads.
  • Crucial: Use Simpler to manage sample settings (attack, release, tune).
  • Add per-pad effects (Eq, Compressor) by dragging them onto the pad in the chain list.

Organize and Save:

  • Tip: Standardize layout (e.g., Kicks on C1, Snares on D1).
  • Click the Save Preset button (disk icon) in the top right corner of the Drum Rack device to save it in your User Library.

Prepare for Distribution (Create Installer):

  • Locate the saved .adg file in your User Library > Presets > Instruments > Drum Rack folder.
  • Ensure all samples are collected. Open the .als file with the rack, check File Management to make sure all samples are in the same directory, then Collect Files on Export.
  • Zip the .adg file and the folder containing the samples. This zip file is your installer, which users can drag directly into Ableton's browser.
