Pitch Drop is a Max for Live audio effect used to create "tape stop" or vinyl-scratching effects, popular for end-of-track, transitions, or creative, lo-fi pitch drops. Part of the Max for Live Essentials pack, it is available in Ableton 10/11/12+ Suite and allows for real-time control over the pitch drop duration and curve.
Key Features of Pitch Drop:
- Tape Stop Effect: Simulates a turntable or tape machine stopping.
- Controllable Drop: Features adjustable time (duration) and curve (soft vs. sharp).
- Sync Options: Allows for tempo-synced or free-running operation.
- Activation: Easily automated or MIDI-mapped for live performance.
Usage Tips:
- Place the device on the Master track or individual instrument tracks to create a downward pitch-drop modulation, often referred to as a "pitch drop" or "drop in pitch" effect.
- The effect can be activated via automation, allowing for consistent timing in performances.
- Note: In some versions, it may revert to 1/4 timing upon reloading a project.
Pitch Drop emulates the effect of a turntable platter winding down. Incoming audio slows down to a stop at an adjustable rate. No unwanted clicks.
How to use Pitch Drop:
Pitch Drop has only two controls:
- the Drop Duration knob sets how long it takes for the pitch (and thus speed) to drop to zero after Drop Activate is pressed
- the Drop Activate button enables the pitch drop effect. Pressing it again resumes normal audio
