PHONK PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES

1. The Master Clip:

Pushing the Master Bus into hard clipping saturation before the limiter to intentionally generate harmonics and glue the whole track with distortion.

2. The Detuned Sub:

Extreme, intentional detuning and pitch modulation on the 808 to create an unstable, wobbly sub-bass that sounds physically painful.

 3. Reversed Ghost Vocals:

Chopping a vocal sample, reversing a tiny segment, and applying heavy dark reverb to create an unsettling, subliminal transition effect.

 4. Bitcrush the Vibe:

Applying drastic bit-crushing or sample rate reduction directly to the main melody or cowbell to intentionally degrade the quality and add digital noise/grit.

5. Reverb on Drums:

Using a short, dark room reverb on the snare or clap to give it space, then sidechaining the reverb tail to the kick so it disappears on the downbeat — a technique usually avoided, but perfect for dark, pumping rhythms.
