Description
This style of Phonk blends the atmospheric and ethereal qualities of cloud rap with the dark, brooding essence of classic Phonk, creating a more ambient, dreamlike subgenre. It softens the rough edges of OG Phonk and replaces them with expansive, floaty soundscapes that feel introspective and almost hypnotic.
Where did it come from?
Cloud Phonk infuses dreamy, atmospheric textures into traditional Phonk. Influenced by Yung Lean’s cloud rap movement, producers began experimenting with reversed samples, ambient pads, and softer drum patterns. Mythic’s "Ethereal Phonk" (2015) and similar tracks established the genre, blending emotional depth with Memphis rap elements. The term "Plugg Phonk" emerged around 2016, combining "plug" drum patterns with lo-fi Phonk elements for a unique hybrid sound.
