The E-MU SP 1200 Samplert was used by Kayne West, Swizz Beatz, J-Dilla, Pete Rock RZA, Dr. Dre, DJ Premier plus other great hip hop producers. 

The E-mu SP-1200 is a sampler that was released in August 1987 by E-MU Systems like the product it was meant to replace, the SP-12, the SP-1200’s intended use was as a drum machine and sequencer for dance music producers. However, its use as a phrase sampler produces a “gritty” sound due to the machine’s 26.04 kHz sampling rate, its SSM2044 filter chips and its 12-bit sampling resolution. This distinctive sound, often said to capture the “warmth” of vinyl recordings (because both formats attenuate significant amounts of bass and treble), has sustained demand for the SP-1200 more than thirty years after its discontinuation, despite the introduction of digital audio workstations and samplers/sequencers with far superior technical specifications, such as the Akai MPC. The SP-1200 is strongly associated with hip hop’s golden age. Its ability to construct the bulk of a song within one piece of portable gear, a first for the industry, reduced studio costs and increased creative control for hip-hop artists.

Never owned an SP1200 but want to see if there are any fun sounds in the SP1200 factory library? Here’s your chance!

Extract WAV samples from E-MU SP1200 floppy disk images: HxC/HFE or IMG (raw sector images)

This program is not comprehensive nor advanced, but no other utility can do this, so… it is what it is.

Note: It is only possible to read 3.5″ DD 720K/800K type SP1200 disks via a Kryoflux setup or by hot-swapping between a floppy emulator and a standard E-MU SP1200 floppy drive. Due to the unique format, it is impossible to read/write/copy SP1200 disks with Omniflop or other standard methods used on PC with other vintage samplers.

In other words, if you don’t already have your SP disks in HFE format (or a Kryoflux stream) then you’re likely out-of-luck because this utility will not be able to access your physical floppies.

E-MU SP-1200 Factory Sample Library

This is the complete set of factory SP-1200 diskette images, however these have not been extensively tested and may or may not be altered from the original content. 

Intended for use with Lotharek or Gotek devices flashed with HxC/FlashFloppy firmware.
