  • YAMAHA MidRadio Player - the FREE solution for playing XG MIDI sequences. Unfortunately the player is discontinued, so it may be hard to find. It is also only XG-Lite, so it does not support the full range of insertion effects and sysex compatibility that XG Level 1 devices would offer. Great nonetheless. Available for Windows XP and Vista.
  • Synthesia - a game which can help you learn to play piano/keyboard. Uses MIDI sequences.
  • Music Animation Machine - another great, sleek MIDI visualiser that's very popular among Japanese youtube users. There are multiple viewing modes, so you can watch your MIDIs play in a variety of different ways.
  • LilyPond - create PDFs of music notation

Soundfont Resources:

  • SF2MIDI - Large soundfont archive, allowing users to easily submit their own creations.
  • SoundZone - Large collection of soundfonts.
  • SoundFounts.it - Large collection of soundfonts and VST instruments.
  • SynthFont - Software that allows people without SoundBlaster soundcards to use and create soundfonts.
  • TiMidity++ - Another popular application for playing and rendering midis using soundfonts.

VST Plugins:

  • KVR Audio - Plugin Resources, news and information about open standard audio plugins.
  • VST Central - Searchable list with all the free VST and DirectX plugins for PC and Mac
  • Tweakbench - A small collection of neat little VSTs, some designed to emulate the sound of the NES.
  • YAMAHA S-YXG50 VSTi - The VST equivalent to the well-known S-YXG50 MIDI device, it has a larger WAVE ROM/better sound quality, and can be used as a playback device in players with VSTi support (such as foobar2000.) This allows for XG Level 1 playback on Windows Vista. Unfortunately, it has been discontinued.
