Drift Phonk

Description

Drift Phonk is a high-energy, aggressive subgenre of Phonk that stands out for its repetitive cowbell melodies, driving rhythms, and heavy, punchy 808 basslines. This style is deeply tied to car culture, especially drifting, and is often the soundtrack for fast-paced, adrenaline-filled drifting videos.

Where did it come from?

Drift Phonk gained prominence in the late 2010s, blending Phonk’s raw energy with fast-paced rhythms and aggressive cowbell loops. KORDHELL’s "Murder in My Mind" (2019) and DVRST’s "Close Eyes" (2021) propelled the subgenre into the spotlight, with the latter achieving viral success on TikTok and YouTube. The Russian drifting community and car enthusiasts worldwide adopted Drift Phonk as a soundtrack for drifting montages, thanks to its energetic beats and distorted 808 basslines. PHONKHA’s "NEON BLADE" (2021) further solidified the style, emphasizing its intense, rave-like qualities.
