G Phonk

Description

This subgenre of Phonk draws heavy inspiration from West Coast G-Funk, merging the relaxed, funk-infused vibes of 90s California rap with the gritty, dark essence of Memphis Phonk. It’s a seamless fusion of two iconic styles, creating a sound that feels both nostalgic and innovative.

Where did it come from?

G Phonk merges the laid-back grooves of West Coast G-Funk with Memphis Phonk’s gritty aesthetic. DJ Smokey’s "Evil Wayz" series (2015) and producers sampling West Coast synth leads created a hybrid sound that bridges Southern and Californian rap influences. The genre grew steadily, characterized by funky basslines, smooth synths, and a nostalgic yet modern vibe.

Defining Features

• Distinct West Coast-inspired grooves.

• Heavy basslines and funky rhythms.
